One round of Arm Cutter between two tasks: arcade as a short game break

Three hearts, endless waves, a natural ending: how Arm Cutter from HAUNTED becomes a short break you actually stop after.

The laundry still has twenty minutes to go. Your next video call doesn’t start for half an hour. You have a small window of time, and you don’t want to fill it with scrolling.

A short game round can fill a window like that nicely. The trick is to pick a game that ends on its own. That way five minutes doesn’t turn into fifty.

Why three hearts make a good break timer

HAUNTED: Are You Alone? is a mixed-reality horror game for Meta Quest. Alongside the story, there are three arcade modes you’ll find in the main menu under “Games.” One of them is called Arm Cutter.

All the arcade modes share the same rules:

  • Three hearts. If something hits you, you lose one. When they’re all gone, the round is over.
  • Endless waves. Each wave gets a little harder.
  • Combo up to ×8. Fast hits in a row raise the multiplier.
  • Coins and high scores. You collect coins and might land in the mode’s top 5.

What makes this great for a break: the round has a built-in ending. You don’t decide when it’s over. The three hearts decide for you. When they’re gone, the break is over too.

What Arm Cutter is about

The mode comes from the second chapter of the story. Ghostly fists knock from inside your real walls. The knocking tells you where a long arm is about to break through. Then the arm reaches for your head, and you chop it off with the axe.

With each wave there are more arms, they’re faster, and the warning gets shorter. From wave three on, they come from the ceiling too. Later you can unlock a sword in the shop, the Bone Market, and use it instead of the axe.

Three tips for relaxed rounds

1. Listen for the knocking. The knocking is your most important clue. The sounds come from real directions in your room. Before you start whipping your head around, pause for a moment and listen: which wall is it? Then turn calmly toward it.

2. Stay in the middle. If you stand in the center of the room, you can reach all the walls at roughly the same speed. And you have enough distance to swing without hitting a shelf.

3. Let them come a little closer. If a hand gets within 0.7 meters of your face before you chop it, you get a CLOSE-CALL bonus. That’s the thrill of the mode. But you don’t have to chase it. A safe hit is a good hit too.

How to actually stop after the round

The hardest part of any short break is the ending. “Just one more round” is a very familiar sentence. These little rules help:

  • Decide beforehand. Tell yourself before you start: one round. Or two. But pick the number before you put on the headset.
  • Check the high score, then take it off. When the hearts are gone, take a look at the top-5 list. Then take the headset off right away, before your finger drifts back to “Start.”
  • Set out a follow-up task. Put something next to you that’s waiting after the round: the laundry, a glass of water, your emails. That gives the break a clear after.
  • Save your coins for later. You can put off shopping in the Bone Market until another break. That’s a nice reason to come back tomorrow instead of playing on today.

A quick word on safety

Arm Cutter is a movement game. You turn fast, swing, and look up. Please keep these points in mind:

  • Clear space around you, no glasses or pets in the room.
  • Lights on, so the headset can see your surroundings and your hands well.
  • Distance from lamps, especially from wave three on, when arms come from the ceiling too.
  • Not for everyone. The game is PEGI 18 and contains loud scares and gore. Every time you start it, it warns pregnant people and people with epilepsy, heart conditions, or anxiety disorders.

What you need

A Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3, or Quest 3S and a scanned room. You play with controllers or with hand tracking, solo. According to the store page, no internet connection is needed to play. You’ll find everything else on the store page for HAUNTED: Are You Alone?.

Try this today: Before you start a short game break, set an object next to your headset that stands for your next task, like your mug or a key. When the round is over, reach for it first.

A break can be exciting. It just shouldn’t forget that it’s a break.
