Ten Minutes to Clear Space: Get Your Room Ready to Duck, Lean, and Crawl

A calm tidying ritual before a round of HAUNTED: floor clear, furniture pushed aside, pets out, and the room scan done in a few steps.

An empty, tidy living room floor with a round coffee table pushed to the side

You’re in the mood for a scary round. The headset is charged, the controllers are ready. Then your eyes land on the floor: a laundry basket, two pillows, a pair of slippers, and the coffee table sitting right in the middle of the room.

The temptation is to just start playing. But with a game where you move around a lot, ten minutes of prep is time well spent. And the nice part is: tidying up can be a small, calm ritual that gets you in the mood.

Why space matters so much in HAUNTED

HAUNTED: Are You Alone? is a mixed-reality horror game for Meta Quest. It uses your real room as the level. Arms break out of your walls, a hole opens in your floor, and sounds come from real directions in the room.

Your body is the controller. In the game you’ll:

  • spin around fast when something knocks behind you,
  • lean forward to look into a hole in the floor,
  • squat down and duck,
  • crawl on your hands and knees in one spot,
  • swing an axe or a bat.

On top of that come loud jump scares. And when you get startled, you often take a thoughtless step backward. That’s why a clear floor is the most important thing to prepare.

The good news: according to the game’s description, any room size works. You don’t need a ballroom, just a clear area.

The ten-minute ritual in five steps

Set a timer for ten minutes if you like. Put on some music or open a window. It’s not about perfection, it’s about safety.

1. Everything off the floor (three minutes). Pick up anything on the floor: shoes, bags, toys, cables, laundry. Loose carpet edges count too. When you’re crawling, you feel every little thing under your knees.

2. Furniture to the side (two minutes). Push the coffee table against the wall or into another room. Chairs go to the edge. Pay extra attention to edges at knee height, because when you duck and crawl you’re closer to the floor than usual.

3. Living things and drinks out (one minute). Pets get a break in another room. Glasses and mugs go to the kitchen. A knocked-over drink turns into a slip hazard fast in the dark.

4. Check corners and ceiling (one minute). Walk slowly along the walls once. Is a lamp hanging low? Is there a shelf with loose things nearby? When you swing your arm, you reach things like that faster than you’d think.

5. Lights on and a quick breath (one minute). Turn on your normal room lights. The headset’s cameras need light to see your room and your hands well. The game itself takes care of the creepy mood.

The room scan: do it right once, then relax

HAUNTED builds on the Quest’s room setup, called Space Setup. The headset maps walls, floor, ceiling, and larger furniture.

When you start, the game first shows a content warning and then a list of all the rooms scanned on your headset. You just pick the right one. “Scan a new room” starts a fresh scan.

A few tips for scanning:

  • Scan after you tidy up. If the coffee table was still in the middle during the scan, it’s still there in the saved room.
  • Look around slowly. Turn calmly and look into every corner, up and down too.
  • Rescan when things change. If you’ve moved furniture, a fresh scan is worth it. You can also switch rooms later in the game settings.

A short checklist for the fridge

If you play often, a little list that never changes helps:

  1. Floor clear?
  2. Table pushed aside?
  3. Pets and drinks out?
  4. Lights on?
  5. Right room selected in the menu?

Five questions, one minute. Over time you’ll run through them automatically.

And after playing?

Don’t just leave the room as it is. Put the table back, toss the pillows on the sofa, and stow the controllers. That’s not just tidy, it’s also a small way to close things out. The room is your normal room again.

Especially after a horror game, that can feel good. The wall that arms just came out of is simply a wall with a picture on it again.

If you’re curious about the game: all the details are on the HAUNTED: Are You Alone? store page. The game is PEGI 18 and, with loud jump scares, gore, and flickering light, is clearly meant for adults.

Try this today: Stand in the middle of your play room, close your eyes for a moment, and slowly stretch your arms out in every direction. Anything you touch gets moved aside before your next round.

A clear floor isn’t much work. But it turns a scare into fun instead of a bruise.
