A Little Scare Instead of One More Episode: HAUNTED as a 30-Minute Evening for Adults

HAUNTED's story runs about half an hour. Here's how to plan a grown-up horror evening with a warning, clear floor space, and a definite ending.

It’s just after nine. The kitchen is tidy, the day was long, and the remote is already in your hand. Normally you’d start the next episode right about now. And then maybe one more after that.

Sometimes it feels good to fill the evening differently. Not more productively, just differently. Something that has a beginning and an end, and that keeps you from sinking into the couch. For adults who like a good scare, that can be a short horror game.

Why a game with a clear ending fits an evening well

Shows are built to keep you watching. The next episode starts on its own, and suddenly it’s midnight. An experience with a fixed length works differently: you know ahead of time how much time you need, and when it’s over, it’s over.

HAUNTED: Are You Alone? is that kind of experience. It’s a mixed-reality horror game for Meta Quest where your own room becomes the setting. The story runs about 25 to 35 minutes. That’s roughly as long as one episode with the intro.

You also move around. You turn, lean forward, crouch down. Not a workout, but not sitting still either. For a lot of people, that’s a welcome change after a day at a desk.

Honest up front: who this isn’t for

A horror game isn’t a relaxation exercise. It’s meant to scare you, loudly and suddenly. Before you plan your evening, it’s worth a quick look at these points:

  • PEGI 18. The game isn’t intended for children or teens.
  • Content warning. Every time you start, the game shows a two-page warning: sudden loud noises, flickering and dimmed light, gore, and intense jump scares.
  • Not suitable, according to that warning, for pregnant people or people with epilepsy, heart conditions, or anxiety disorders.
  • If you startle easily or horror keeps you awake for a long time, pick a different evening break. That’s completely fine.

How to plan your 30-minute horror evening

Here’s a simple rundown. All together you’ll need about 45 minutes, including setup and winding down.

1. Start early enough (planning). Don’t start right before bed. If you want to be in bed by 11, half past eight or nine is a good time. That leaves room to come back down.

2. Pick the room (five minutes). The game uses your scanned room, with walls, floor, and ceiling. Any room size works. What matters is clear floor space, because you’ll be turning, ducking, leaning forward, swinging, and at one point even crawling on your knees. So move the coffee table aside and pick everything up off the floor.

3. Actually read the warning (one minute). The content warning shows up anyway. Read it on purpose instead of clicking past it. After that, you pick your room from the list of scanned spaces in the menu.

4. Play the story (about 30 minutes). A little girl calls you on an old rotary phone and leads you through the night. Each chapter brings a new idea: an axe here, a flashlight there, a mirror another time. If you die in a chapter, the game offers you a hint. From the third death in the same chapter, you can skip it too.

5. Stop on purpose (ten minutes). When the credits roll, that’s it. Headset off, big light on, glass of water. After the story there are still three endless arcade modes, but we’ll save those for another evening. Otherwise that half hour turns right back into a whole evening.

Little things that make the evening nicer

  • Light in the room. Mixed reality shows you your real room through the cameras. A normally lit room helps the headset see you and your surroundings well. The game creates the dark atmosphere on its own.
  • Comfortable clothes. You’ll be crouching and crawling a bit. Jeans with a tight belt aren’t ideal for that.
  • Drinks out of the way. A glass on the floor and a sudden step backward don’t go well together.
  • Pets out of the room. It looks strange to them when you fight the air, and otherwise they like to walk right between your feet.
  • Give your roommates a heads-up. You might get loud. A quick word beforehand saves you the questions.

What it costs and what you need

You need a Meta Quest 2, Quest Pro, Quest 3, or Quest 3S. According to the store page, the game runs standing or room-scale, and you don’t need an internet connection to play. You play with controllers or with your hands via hand tracking. The game is made for one person.

On October 10, 2026, HAUNTED cost £3.99 in the UK Meta Store. For current info, see the store page for HAUNTED: Are You Alone?.

If one evening is too much

You don’t have to play the story in one go. Every chapter is reachable from the start through chapter select, and “Continue” takes you back to where you left off. If two chapters are enough for you, take the headset off. The rest will wait.

And if you notice that horror isn’t doing you any good that evening, just put the show on after all. A plan is a suggestion, not an obligation.

Try this today: For your next free evening, pick a time you’ll start and a time you’ll stop. Write both on a note and leave it next to the headset.

A little scare, half an hour, lights on afterward. Sometimes that’s exactly the right amount of adventure for a perfectly ordinary Tuesday.
