Some evenings are made for a challenge. Others aren’t. You’re tired, the day was long, and really you just want to play a little without pushing yourself or getting frustrated.

Good to know: Laser Thief can be set up to fit exactly those evenings.

A quick reminder: what it’s about

Laser Thief is a game for the Meta Quest where lasers are strung through your real room. You grab loot on the other side and bring it back to the start pad without touching a beam. The little robot BLIP comes along with you.

According to the studio, there are two independent dials you can turn down to lower the tension: difficulty and laser speed.

Dial 1: Casual, Thief, or Ghost

Difficulty decides what happens when you get hit.

Level What happens when you get hit
Casual You have three shields per heist. A hit costs one shield, you keep the loot, and you’re briefly invulnerable.
Thief (default) Every hit means “caught”: loot back on its pedestal, back to the pad, try again.
Ghost Getting caught restarts the whole level, timer included (Story Mode only).

For a relaxed evening, Casual is the friendliest choice. According to the studio, the shields work in Story Mode and Free Mode. In modes like Dancing Lasers, Bomb Run, or Endless Heist there are no shields. So for gentle evenings, you’re best off sticking with Story or Free Mode.

Dial 2: Laser Speed EASY

The second setting is LASER SPEED, and it has three levels: EASY, NORMAL, and HARD. According to the studio, EASY does things like this:

  • The green “hunter” lasers that slowly turn toward you move noticeably more slowly.
  • Violet lasers that light up to the beat of the music blink on a longer rhythm.
  • Magenta blinking lasers have longer pauses.

You’ll find the setting on the level select and results screens. It’s saved and applies from the next level start.

Combine Casual with EASY and you get the mildest version of the game: more time to read the room, and three cushions for the moments when an arm swings a little too far after all.

Dial 3: Listen to BLIP

The robot BLIP hovers next to the pad before each level and reads out a short hint, according to the studio. In a level with cameras, for example, it reminds you to stand still when a camera is looking at you.

These hints are worth gold when you’re tired. Instead of working out the room on your own, you get one sentence that tells you the gist. You can also turn BLIP off in the settings. Then the hint shows up as a text banner. For a gentle start, it’s worth leaving it on.

Even more cushioning

A few other things make the game forgiving:

  • No game over in Story Mode and Free Mode.
  • Skip after five failed attempts: In Story Mode, a button then appears next to the pad that takes you to the next level without stars.
  • Pause: The menu button stops the level. Time freezes, the music gets quieter.
  • No star requirement: New levels unlock as soon as you finish the previous one, no matter how many stars you got.

When you can happily stay on Thief

Casual isn’t a must. According to the studio, the default Thief level is already forgiving: get caught and you simply go back to the pad. No restart, no lost progress.

Thief works well when:

  • you’ve already done the training with BLIP and feel comfortable,
  • the shield display distracts you more than it calms you,
  • you like noticing that a clean run counts just a little bit more.

You can switch anytime, by the way. Feel free to do it differently on different days.

Don’t forget safety

Even the gentlest mode is a room-scale game. Clear space (the store recommends at least 3 × 3 meters), no tripping hazards, good light for Mixed Reality mode, and short sessions. There’s no seated option.

More about the game is on the Laser Thief store page.

Try this today: Open the settings, set Casual and Laser Speed EASY, and play exactly two levels in Story Mode. Notice how many shields you have left at the end — just out of curiosity, not as a score.

To close

There’s no “right” difficulty. There’s only the one that fits you today. And on tired days, that’s the one with the three shields.
